Helen Love, Out and About: The Phill Jupitus Breakfast Show 19th November 2004

It was six forty-five am when the car pulled up outside my house, and an hour later we arrived bleary-eyed in Cardiff to join in the early morning music and banter of Phill Jupitus's Breakfast Show on BBC 6 Music.

Instead of the normal BBC Ivory Towers studios, Phill is broadcasting from Cardiff University for a reason far too unfathomable to work out at that time in the morning.

After another cup of coffee we're in the studio, and "Debbie Loves Joey" is blaring out across both the campus and the (digital) airwaves.

The interview starts with a nod, and the fact that Phill Jupitus is also a stand-up comic helps put everyone at ease. Soon enough, we're listening to "(Do You Remember) Rock 'n' Roll Radio" by The Ramones.

The second half of the interview zips along as quickly as the first, and it's new song "A Boy Like You" and then time for the news. Helen records an ident for the station, and then it's a chat and the obligatory punk-rock photocall, up against a brick-wall, back out on the balcony.

More coffee and a bit of shopping in Cardiff, then home for Top of The Pops. And sleep!

Thanks to Phill Jupitus and Phil Wilding, the staff from 6Music and Xpress radio, and to Helen for inviting me along.
